Thirty years ago, meteorologists were warily eyeing a tropical depression churning westward across the Atlantic Ocean.
On Sept. 27, 1985, that storm system — by then known as Hurricane Gloria — came howling across the Connecticut coastline, ripping roofs off building and tearing down trees and power lines. Nearly four million people lost power from Virginia to Canada.
As Hurricane Gloria’s 30th anniversary approaches, The United Illuminating Company (UI) and its parent company, UIL Holdings Corporation, are remembering the storm and the eight-day effort it touched off to restore power to 184,000 UI customers.
